Getting to Know Mike

Updated: Sep 26, 2024

For those who have already read our newsletter back in May, we are excited to reannounce that Upstate Fire Protection Engineering (UFPE) is officially RAN Fire Protection Engineering! RAN and UFPE have been longtime competitors, but it was destined that they would eventually merge. RAN’s beliefs aligned well with Mike’s and UFPE’s, which made the acquisition smoother. Through the acquisition of UFPE, we added a new Fire Protection Engineer, Michael Klemenz to the team. Mike was the previous owner of Upstate Fire Protection Engineering and is currently leading RAN’s Texas office!

Mike has a comprehensive background and knowledge when it comes to fire protection engineering. Prior to UFPE, Mike earned his B.S. in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park. Immediately after Mike graduated from college, he was employed by the U.S. Navy, as a civilian Fire Protection Engineer at Naval Station Norfolk. Then, he became a Fire Protection Department Manager for a New York based MEP & FP firm. He received professional engineering licenses in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Texas. Mike went on to operate as the corporate FPE for a large fire protection company. Furthermore, Mike established UFPE in order to fulfill the demand for qualified and skilled professional fire protection engineering and consulting services, wherever it was needed. UFPE’s primary mission was to protect the health, welfare, and safety of the public against the damages of fires.

Some organizational affiliations include:

o    National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

o    Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) – Professional Member

o    Liverpool Fire Department

o    New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE)

o    National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE)

o    Riverdale Heights Volunteer Fire Department

o    Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department

o    Minetto Fire Department

Mike has extensive emergency service experience. He has a deep understanding of the relationship between building design and construction, as well as the fire service. Following a 32-year fire service career in New York State and Prince George’s County, Maryland, Mike retired from active fire department/EMS service in 2017. He was an adjunct professor in the SUNY OCC fire protection technology A.A.S. program, teaching Fire Dynamics and Chemistry of Hazardous Materials. He also enjoys serving as a consultant to fire departments.

In his free time, Mike enjoys horseback riding and riding motorcycles, but most of all dinner with his wife.

We are excited to have Mike here at RAN and cannot wait to watch him flourish. We are glad that we are continuing to expand RAN’s presence in the Lonestar State!
